Quality tips
Instagram's own compression is the real quality bottleneck, so your job is damage control: upload at exactly 1080px wide, quality 85+, with slight pre-sharpening. Larger uploads just get crushed harder by Instagram.
For carousels, keep every image the same dimensions and orientation — mixed sizes make the carousel jump and look amateur.
Text overlays (quotes, announcements) stay crispest as PNG at 1080px — but note Instagram will still convert to JPG, so keep the text large and bold to survive it.
Things to watch out for
- The resizer does not crop. It scales proportionally, never stretches. If your photo is 3:2 and you need 1:1, crop the square yourself first — otherwise you will get a 1080×720 image, not a square.
- Stories are 9:16 or nothing. A landscape photo “resized for story” becomes a tiny landscape floating in black bars. Shoot or crop vertical for stories.
- Do not upscale phone screenshots. A 750px-wide screenshot stretched to 1080px looks soft. It is acceptable for stories viewed briefly, but noticeable in feed posts.
